Learn to Speak English Easily: Using ‘have to’ and ‘has to’

In the previous unit you have learnt the Use of ‘have’ and ‘has’ and in this unit you will learn the Use of ‘have to’ and ‘has to‘.

With ‘have to‘ we use ‘I‘, ‘you‘, ‘we‘, and ‘they‘. We can also refer to two or more than two persons with ‘have to‘. We use ‘has to‘ with ‘he‘, ‘she‘ and ‘it‘ and also to refer to someone by name.

Use of ‘have to’

We use ‘have to‘ —

  • To talk about something that is necessary.

I have to learn to speak in English soon.
You have to help me urgently.
We have to reach school in time.
They have to win the match to go to the finals.
Mary and Sheila have to submit their report by Monday.
The police have to catch the thief. 
People have to cast their vote.

  • To talk about one’s obligation

I have to take my friend to the doctor.
You have to work hard to support the family.
We have to protect the environment.
They have to take care of their parents.

Use of ‘has to’

We use ‘has to‘ —

  • To talk about something that is necessary.

Michael has to work on Sundays even.
He has to consult a doctor immediately.
She has to cook for the guests.
John has to lose weight.
The dog/It has to eat.
The government has to look into the problem.

  • To talk about one’s obligation

He has to attend the meeting.
She has to invite them to the party.
The dog/It has to obey the master.
Charlie has to completet the work.
Susan has to attend the staff meeting.

Use of ‘have to’ and ‘has to’ in Negative Sentences

  • To make negative sentences with ‘have to’, we use “don’t have to”.

I have to go now.
I don’t have to go now.

You have to consult a doctor.
You don’t have to consult a doctor.

We have to sell our car.
We don’t have to sell our car.

They have to compensate for the loss.
They don’t have to compensate for the loss.

William and Franklin have to work overtime everyday.
William and Franklin don’t have to work overtime everyday.

  • To make negative sentences with ‘has to’, we use “doesn’t have to”.

He has to pay his fee this semester.
He doesn’t have to pay his fee this semester.

She has to cook dinner tonight.
She doesn’t have to cook dinner tonight.

It has to gaurd the house.
It doesn’t have to gaurd the house.

Priyanka has to take up a job.
Priyanka doesn’t have to take up a job.
