Learn to Speak English Easily: How to Use ‘is’ with ‘this’ and ‘that’

In the previous unit you have learnt to make Questions Using ‘is’ with ‘he’ and ‘she’. In this unit you will learn the use of ‘is‘ with ‘this’ and that. We use ‘is’ with ‘this’ and ‘that’ to talk about a person or a thing in reference to the present. We use ‘is’ with ‘this’ to talk about a person or a thing near us; ‘is’ with ‘that’ to talk about a person or a thing away from us.

Use of ‘is’ with ‘this’

  • To introduce oneself over the phone or in person.

This is Franklin.

This is …………… (you can mention your name)
This is …………… (you can mention your name) speaking.

  • To introduce another person.

This is Mohan/Sheela.
This is my niece.
This is my friend, Srinivas.

  • To refer to a thing, a place or an animal near us.

This is a laptop.
This is an institute.
This is a cow.

  • To express an opinion about a place, a situation or an experience.

This is wonderful.
This place is marvelous.
This is interesting.

Use of ‘is’ with ‘that’

  • To talk about/To identify a person away from us.

That is Javed/Julie.
That is our uncle, John.
That is my mother in the car.

  • To talk about a thing, a place or an animal away from us.

That is Raju’s car.
That is our house.
That is a kangaroo.

  • To express an opinion about a place, a situation or an experience.

That is good.
That is awesome.
That is great.
