Was’ is the past tense of ‘is’. We use ‘was’ with ‘I’, ‘he’, ‘she’, or with ‘name of a person’ to talk about the past. We use ‘was‘ —

  • To talk about oneself in reference to the past we use ‘was’ with ‘I’. To talk about the other person we use ‘he’ or ‘she’ or a name.

I was an officer.
He was an actor.
She was a director.
Vivekananda was a social reformer.
Gandhi was a great man.
